Fort Stevens – Historical Area

Needed To July 31, 2024

Time Commitment/Schedule: This assignment is expected to work 5 days a week with 2 consecutive days off.

Purpose of Volunteer Role: The Day-Use Host provides service for the Fort Stevens Historical Area, that is only open to visitor day-use and does not provide overnight facilities for visitors. The Day-Use Host is the only individual allowed to stay overnight in the park at a designated park host site, with the exception of overnight boy scout and living history groups that are permitted through the park office. Host volunteer helps maintain day-use areas by supporting landscaping and facilities at the park.

Amenities: Cell service, satellite connectivity, shared use of a golf cart/utility vehicle.

Site Information: Gravel pad, 50-amp power, water and sewer provided. Picnic table and fire pit at site.

Length of Assignment: 1-3 months depending on availability and season. New hosts may only be offered a 1-month trial assignment.

Schedule: It is common, though not required daily, for hosts to split the scheduled hours. For example, in a host team one operates the store while the other covers the maintenance duties for the day. Specific hours are assigned per monthly schedule. This position is expected to work 5 consecutive days with 2 concurrent days off.

Daily Expectation of Hours: 3-6 daily depending on workload

General Responsibilities:

·         Respond to visitor, staff, and volunteer requests in an attentive and respectful manner.

·         Alert staff to safety issues, facility issues, and major cleaning needs.

·         Operate independently to

·         Operate and maintain large equipment (John Deere 1535 Mower, Walker zero-turn mower).

·         Operate Point of Sale System

·         Sweep floors, turn on exhibit lights, raise and lower flags

·         Organize, inventory, and maintain cleanliness of museum store.

·         Stock and prepare Museum Store for customers

·         Open and close the Memorial Rose Garden

 

Additional Responsibilities:

·         Assist park staff in maintaining the grounds of the Columbia Shore Disc Golf Course as well as the Lil’ Oozlefinch Putt Putt Disc Golf Course. This includes mowing, weed-trimming, replenishing gravel/bark chips, storm clean-up, brush removal, and litter picking.

·         Assist in maintaining the park’s Memorial Rose Garden based on a daily, weekly, bi-weekly, and seasonal maintenance schedule.

Physical Requirements:

·         Ability to lift up to 20 lbs.

·         Ability walk long distances, stand for long periods of time, perform repeated motions such as shoveling or raking.

·         Ability to bend, crouch, twist, push and pull.

·         Ability to travel on uneven terrain, as well as be stationary for long periods of time.

·         Ability to work in a variety of environmental conditions.

Transportation Requirements:

·         Use of personal vehicle required only to get to and from the Museum Store when your site is in the main campground.

Minimum Required Qualifications:

·         Be at least 18 years old.

·         Must be approved for driving and pass a background check.

·         A host who can work in a team

Restricted Tasks:

·         Volunteers may NOT enforce park rules: Hosts may share information on park rules with visitors, but volunteers do not enforce rules or make initial contacts for rule infractions. This activity is only performed by paid park staff with enforcement training.
