LOCATION: Elijah Bristow State Park

DATES: July 1, 2021 – September 30, 2021

DESCRIPTION: The purpose of this position is to assist parks staff with the daily operations of Southern Willamette Management Unit. The host site is located at Elijah Bristow State Park, a developed day use park of 847 acres located on the Middle Fork of the Willamette River, 15 miles southeast of Eugene, Oregon. Park facilities and attractions include 3 group picnic areas, an equestrian trailhead and staging area, over 12 miles of multi-use trails, and extensive natural areas and river frontage.; The Host Site is located adjacent to the equestrian trailhead and staging area in Elijah Bristow State Park. The Host Site includes water and electricity, as well as onsite storage. Septic is provided by weekly pumping of Host’s recreational vehicle.; Job Title: Elijah Bristow Host; Duration: On a monthly basis; Host Coordinator/Park Ranger: Rye Guessford, Cell 541-206-3012; Lead Ranger: Sean Stewart 1-541- 912-5827; Time Commitment:; A Maximum of 4 hours per day per individual or couple with required weekend and special event coverage. Park is open year around from dawn until dusk. Travel to nearby parks may be required.; Work Schedule:; Days off are Wednesday and Thursday. Working hours are during park operational hours. 4 hours per day Friday thru Tuesday. For additional days off or alternate days off contact lead ranger for approval. Septic pumping (250 gallon tank) is scheduled for Wednesdays; you do not need to be present.; Knowledge and Skills Desired:; Enthusiasm for parks recreational experience and the ability and desire to communicate with people of all ages. General maintenance and driving abilities. Enthusiasm to work on special projects with the goal of improving park facilities.; Tasks and Responsibilities:; Routine operations include:; Park will provide:; nnElijah Bristow State Park is located on the Willamette River, and is easy to reach via State Highway 58 southeast of the Eugene. The park was named for one of the first pioneer settlers in Lane County and is comprised of 847 acres of scattered meadows, woodlands and wetlands. Elijah Bristow has more than 10 miles of trail for hikers, mountain bikers and equestrians. Part of the trail system includes a portion of the Eugene to Pacific Crest trail.nnnnSalmon and steelhead trout abound during annual runs in one of the few stretches of the lower Willamette with fast-moving white water. Unique wildlife nesting and habitat areas fill the park’s islands and sloughs.nnnnChannel Lake, a land-locked river channel that meanders through the park, eventually empties back into the Willamette. The lake and a short stretch of Lost Creek are home to a diverse community of plants and wildlife. A dense canopy of broadleaf and evergreen trees with a lush understory of shrubs and herbaceous plants provides an excellent area for nature study and outdoor education.nnnnOsprey, great blue heron, bald eagles and beaver live in and near the park. Elijah Bristow is also home to several threatened species, including the Western pond turtle and the Oregon chub. You’ll find old-growth cottonwood, bigleaf maple, western red cedar, Douglas fir and western hemlock along with stands of Oregon ash and white oak.nnnnElijah Bristow has three reservable picnic areas complete with picnic tables, water, electricity, restrooms and fire rings. Area B has a large barbecue stand. The rate for each area is $50 for up to 50 people, then $1 per person. Each picnic area can accommodate 75 people. There is also ample opportunity for informal picnicking in other, first-come/first-served areas of the park. A separate equestrian staging area with tables, water electricity and a restroom make Bristow a favorite destination with local riding clubs.nnnnVital stats:nnThere is no entrance fee for this park. Group shelters are reservable for a fee.; Services:; Provide security for the Equestrian Trailhead and Staging Area; Litter pick up at the Equestrian and throughout park; Keep parking lot clean and free of horse debris; Empty trash and recycling cans throughout park; Check vault toilet & flush RR on a daily basis sweep out and restock as need; Greet visitors, providing general information regarding State Park amenities, rules and regulations.; Keep Host Site and surrounding area clean, watered, mowed, and trimmed.; Report emergencies or other problems to park staff.; Check oil every Friday in motorized cart if low let staff know.; Assist with special events that occur at Elijah Bristow State Park; Assist in special projects at Elijah Bristow State Park that may include:nnOPRIS inspection tasksnRefurbishing of Equestrian Area, including improvements to host sitenn; Electrical and water hookups, weekly septic pumping of recreational vehicle; Cell phone for business and emergency use.; On site storage; Safety module training as needed based on actual duties.; Tools and equipment to complete projects and tasks; Picnicking; Reservable picnicking; Wildlife watching; Fishing; Horse trail; Hiking trail; Bicycle trail; Forest; Prairie; Waterways; Lake; Restrooms
