DESCRIPTION:
Volunteers for the Roving Rangers provide formal and informal interpretive programming at sites throughout the Coconino National Forest and the Flagstaff Area National Monuments. The goal of the program is to foster meaningful connections between visitors and their public lands.
The Roving Rangers is an interpretive partnership between the Coconino National Forest and the Flagstaff Area National Monuments. Volunteer participants provide formal and informal interpretation at a number of sites throughout the Coconino National Forest and the Flagstaff Area National Monuments. The goal of these visitor engagements is to foster meaningful connections between visitors and their public lands, and promote a stewardship ethic.
Roving Ranger volunteers facilitate the following:
- Informal interpretation at the Arizona Snowbowl. Roving Rangers interpret the natural and cultural history of the San Francisco Peaks at the top of the scenic chair lift. This duty is conducted at high elevation 11,000′.
- Research, prepare and present evening programs at USFS campgrounds.
- Lead guided walks in the Coconino National Forest or in the Flagstaff Area National Monuments.
- Provide orientations and rove park trails at the Flagstaff Area National Monuments.
- Assist with special projects and outreach events.

Participants in the Roving Rangers are stationed outside for up to four-hour intervals. Participants must be comfortable volunteering in variable weather conditions.
Roving ranger volunteers are stationed at 7,000′-11,000′. Being able to work at elevation is important.
Volunteers’ duties take place during the week, weekends, and in the evenings
Duties include public speaking, hiking, and engaging with the public for up to 4 hours at a time.
