DESCRIPTION:

Awesome campground host position on Tombigbee National Forest in Ackerman, MS!!!

Choctaw Lake Recreation Area is located on Tombigbee National Forest in central MS. It includes a campground with 20 RV/tent campsites with water and electric hookups, drinking water, bathhouses with showers and toilets, picnic tables, fire rings, RV dump station, pavilions and trails around the 100-acre lake. The campground is located within the Choctaw Lake Recreation Area which offers fishing, a swimming area, boat ramp, and trails. Please provide at least one reference when applying. Applicants will need to fill out a Volunteer Service Application (form OF-301) and undergo a background check.

DUTIES

Camp hosts will welcome day use visitors and campers, provide directions, advise visitors of activities occurring within the forest and the surrounding area, answer questions and educate visitors on recreation area rules and regulations. Hosts monitor the campground to ensure visitors occupy their sites in accordance with Forest Service policy, are displaying applicable documentation, and are vacating sites in a timely manner at checkout.

Volunteer hosts routinely perform minor maintenance duties such as cleaning bathhouses & restrooms, grounds upkeep (eg. assist with pickup of litter and debris, spraying weeds, limited mowing), cleaning out fire pits, picking up litter, cleaning waterless toilets located along the lakeside trail, blowing leaves off of parking areas, and other duties as assigned. Record keeping and occasionally filling out forms is also required. Campground hosts are expected to provide timely information to Forest Service recreation staff regarding potential safety concerns as well as maintenance and repair needs raised by visitors or through personal observations. Two of the most important jobs as campground host are to provide an enjoyable camping experience for the public and assist staff in protecting forest resources.

Visitor Services and Public Safety:

•        Open and close the gate daily

·        Check in and check out campers daily.

•        Greet visitors, provide information/maps, and answer questions with courtesy and politeness

•        Inform visitors of rules and regulations when appropriate and tactfully inform visitors of infractions.

•        Report violations and suspicious activities to district staff and Forest law enforcement officers and/or the Sherriff. Your safety is our priority; don’t put yourself in danger.

Restrooms and Bathhouses:

·        Check and clean restrooms daily.

·        Check and clean waterless vault toilets 2x/week.

·        Pickup litter. Remove trash from trash cans and dispose of in dumpster.

·        Disinfect/wipe sinks, counter tops, faucets, mirrors, and commodes.

·        Restock supplies (soap, toilet paper, paper towels, light bulbs ) as needed

·        Sweep and remove spider webs as needed

·        Spot clean walls and mop floors

Campground and Day Use Area:

·        Clean grills and empty ashes and coals

·        Remove debris from all developed areas: lawns, picnic areas, drives, parking lot, etc.

·        Blow off parking lots as needed

·        Pick up trash on the grounds and place in trash cans or dumpsters

·        Empty trash cans, replacing with new liners, and place trash bags in dumpster

·        Mow lawn and weed trim around signs, fence posts, and trees, as needed

·        Rake leaves in picnic area, as needed

·        Communicate with Forest staff about supply needs and maintenance issues

QUALIFICATIONS

TIME COMMITMENT: There is a minimum 6-month time commitment (unless otherwise agreed upon). Choctaw Lake campground opens for the 2022 season on March 11th and will close for the season the Sunday after Thanksgiving. Hosts will work a minimum of 30 hours per week and are required to be on site 5 days per week, especially on weekends and heavy use holidays. Hosts may have two consecutive days off Monday through Thursday; shifts will vary depending on campground needs. Most workdays revolve around the core hours of 8 a.m. to 8 p.m., but infrequent knocks on a host’s camper door at all hours of the day and night should be expected.

REQUIREMENTS: Hosts are expected to wear a FS volunteer uniform vest when working with visitors. Hosts are to arrive with adequate housing for the length of their commitment. Trailers, campers or motor homes are recommended. Hosts are provided a camping site with electrical (50 amp), water and sewage hookups at no charge.

HOUSING DETAILS: Hosts are provided a camping site with electrical (50 amp), water and sewage hookups at no charge in exchange for service. Upon signing a volunteer agreement, hosts will be eligible for up to $400 per month for per diem and expenses.

WORK ENVIRONMENT

Host duties are performed outdoors in a variety of weather environments typical to forests in Mississippi. During the summer hosts must be able to tolerate high humidity, temperatures sometimes exceeding 100 degrees, and buggy (mosquitoes, ticks) conditions. Hosts should be in good physical condition. A valid driver’s license is required to use a golf cart, which is furnished by the Forest Service. All adults must agree to undergo a background check.
