JOB DESCRIPTION:

Cottonwood Recreation Area Camp Host

The Fremont-Winema National Forest is outreaching for campground hosts at two locations across the Forest for the 2023 season at Cottonwood Recreation Area and Lofton Reservoir.

Cottonwood Meadows Campground: The Cottonwood Recreation Area, located 45 minutes northwest of Lakeview, Oregon, is tucked within a wooded basin in an ecologically diverse landscape with a small lake, high peaks and unique rock features. While Cottonwood is one of the busier campgrounds on the East-Side of the Fremont-Winema, rarely is the campground full, and one can always find solitude. Western white pine, white fir, cedar and ponderosa pine offers shade and aspens turn sunny gold every autumn. Abundant deer, elk and even occasional black bear can be sighted strolling through the area, and the lake is always bustling with migratory birds. This campground features 20 total campsites; each with a picnic table and fire ring. Six vault toilets are located within the Recreation Area, and potable water is available on site.

Additionally, there are four walk-in, tent only sites and one horse camp site. The horse camp includes its own corral and water area as well as a trailer turn-around. This high-elevation camp is generally free of snow mid-June through mid-October.

Cotton Meadows Lake, stocked with rainbow and Brook trout, offers excellent fishing with electric motors only allowed for boating. There are two day-use areas and a boat launch on the lake. Only non-motorized and electric boat motors are allowed. Other recreation opportunities include hiking along adjacent trails along Cottonwood Creek and Cougar Peak, and wildlife viewing.

The camp host position provides the public with a friendly and welcoming face to help visitors feel at home while providing information on recreational opportunities, natural resources, and the local area.

Duties for this position would include:

  • Greeting guests, providing information and guidance
  • Explaining fees and rules of Campground and surrounding area
  • Performing light maintenance of campground
    • Cleaning up and keeping campground tidy
    • Patrolling for litter
    • Minor fixes as able/needed
  • Restocking outhouses
  • Restocking fee envelopes
  • Respond to visitor problems/complaints
  • Forwarding large issues to Forest Service Staff

Although volunteers are not paid a salary, a stipend is provided among other perks

Perks include:

  • Free Campsite for the Season
  • Propane/ gas
  • $38 per day (while on duty) subsistence allowance
  • Mileage reimbursement/ use of gov vehicle for official duty, as available.

Applications are being accepted through April 30. Campground hosts typically start in mid-May and volunteer through Labor Day. Actual volunteer start and end dates are negotiable. Hosts take time off during the week, to ensure availability to campers over weekends. Individuals or couples interested in serving for at least one month are encouraged to inquire. Retirees often find the camp host program an ideal way to spend summers getting to know new forests and new people.
