JOB DESCRIPTION:

Lofton Reservoir Camp Host

The Fremont-Winema National Forest is outreaching for campground hosts at two locations across the Forest for the 2023 season at Cottonwood Recreation Area and Lofton Reservoir.

Lofton Reservoir Campground: Lofton Reservoir Campground is one of the three main points of interest in the Lofton Recreation Area, including Heart Lake and Holbrook Reservoir. Located 20 miles east of Bly, Oregon, this campground features 20 individual and 4 group campsites. These spacious campsites can accommodate trailers and feature grills, fire rings, and picnic tables. There are four vault toilets. There are no RV hookups available at Lofton Reservoir, and campers are encouraged to be self-sufficient. The road is paved all the way to Lofton Area Reservoir, ideal if you’re towing a trailer or boat.

The high elevation forest surrounding the Recreation Area is generally free of snow mid-June through mid-October and showcases a mixed conifer stand featuring ponderosa, cedar and juniper. The lakeside environment acts like an oasis and often attracts migratory birds and deer. Although the water level varies in the reservoir, the water bodies are stocked with trout for recreational fishing. Boating is allowed via paddle or electric motors. There is one day-use area and a boat ramp and dock for launching watercraft. There is also a trail system that connects Lofton and heart lake.

There is no potable water at the campground. Visitors need to pack an adequate supply of water.

The camp host position provides the public with a friendly and welcoming face to help visitors feel at home while providing information on recreational opportunities, natural resources, and the local area.

Duties for this position would include:

  • Greeting guests, providing information and guidance
  • Explaining fees and rules of Campground and surrounding area
  • Performing light maintenance of campground
    • Cleaning up and keeping campground tidy
    • Patrolling for litter
    • Minor fixes as able/needed
  • Restocking outhouses
  • Restocking fee envelopes
  • Respond to visitor problems/complaints
  • Forwarding large issues to Forest Service Staff

Although volunteers are not paid a salary, a stipend is provided among other perks

Perks include:

  • Free Campsite for the Season
  • Propane/ gas and a weekly delivered supply of potable water (more details upon selection)
  • $38 per day (while on duty) subsistence allowance
  • Mileage reimbursement/ use of gov vehicle for official duty as available.

Applications are being accepted through April 30. Campground hosts typically start in mid-May and volunteer through Labor Day. Actual volunteer start and end dates are negotiable. Hosts take time off during the week, to ensure availability to campers over weekends. Individuals or couples interested in serving for at least one month are encouraged to inquire. Retirees often find the camp host program an ideal way to spend summers getting to know new forests and new people.
