JOB DESCRIPTION:

The mission of the Volunteer program is to inspire and engage volunteers to conserve our nation’s natural and cultural resources and ensure the sustainability of the public lands legacy.  

 We are seeking volunteers (singles or couples) to join the Recreation program on the Kaibab National Forest at the Big Springs Cabin Site. Volunteers will assist North Kaibab Ranger District Forest Service (FS) personnel with: sanitation, general clean-up and maintenance of recreation facilities; and providing public area information, regulations and education to Forest visitors. Volunteers will maintain a good host concept; provide high-quality public service; and present themselves as clean, professional, available to help and with a pleasant attitude with visitors. Volunteers shall wear a provided nametag and Forest Service Volunteer logo uniform item to identify themselves as hosts while on duty (vest, patch and/or hat). Volunteers may be able to use a government provided vehicle to perform assigned tasks, or be reimbursed for personal vehicle use while on duty. Volunteers should have backcountry driving experience on uneven, wet, or rocky dirt roads. Necessary equipment to complete these tasks, training, certifications and licenses as needed, including blood-borne-pathogen, First Aid/CPR, 4WD driving, defensive driving, will be provided by the Forest Service. A commitment of 3 or 6 months of volunteer service is preferred. Volunteers will each be provided $25 for each day of service.  

 Specific duties include but are not limited to: several days a week cleaning Big Springs Cabin Site; cleaning the cabins (6-7 total) and site after 11 am check out and before check-in at 2 pm. Besides the cabins, site amenities include a shared kitchen, dining area and living room, men’s and women’s restrooms (2 showers, 2 toilets each), and an outdoor area with fire pit. In addition, volunteer will be Big Springs Host-on-duty during assigned days to assist guests if needed. Additional janitorial, lawn care (riding mower), and minor maintenance duties will be required as needed.  

In addition to Big Springs cabin duties, trailhead vault toilet upkeep may be needed around the Forest including minor janitorial and restock of supplies.

 Join the North Kaibab Ranger District Recreation Team to volunteer and live on beautiful Kaibab National Forest! A furnished cabin, or a full-hook RV site, will be provided as volunteer housing, located on the Big Springs cabin site. Shared access to a furnished kitchen, restroom/shower house, shared internet and laundry (staff use only) will be available. There is no cell phone service at Big Springs and at many locations on the Forest. Pets are not allowed in the rental cabins, nor in government provided housing cabins.  

Enjoy the Kaibab Plateau, two wilderness areas, the North Rim of the Grand Canyon, the Arizona Strip, and various parks in Southern Utah and Northern Arizona.
