JOB DESCRIPTION:
The Nez Perce – Clearwater National Forest is seeking enthusiast candidates to serve as campground hosts for the 2025 season on the Salmon River Ranger District. Host opportunities are available at the following sites:
Fish Creek Campground: Fish Creek Campground is in the heart of a 4-season recreation area and offers 10 campsites that accommodate tents and recreational vehicles. There are two accessible toilets available. Paved concrete walks provide access to the Fish Creek Pavilion, water spigot, bulletin board, and a paved circular bonfire area. The paved parking lot provides access from the pavilion to the restrooms.
Spring Bar Campground: A popular take-out point for floaters of the Salmon River, the Spring Bar Campground offers a boat launching ramp and 18 tent campsites. A table and fire ring are provided at all but two of the sites. Spring Bar is situated next to a relatively flat part of the Salmon River with the south end nestled in the shade of various fruit bearing trees. The surrounding area also provides for fishing, swimming, berry picking, and exploring.
Host opportunities typically run from approximately mid-May through mid-September, with a minimum 1-month commitment (3-4 months preferred). Hosts volunteer five days a week, including weekends and holidays, typically working 4-5 hours per day/20 hours per week. Hosts are on duty in the morning and evening, during daylight hours. Days off are taken mid-week on Tues/Wed or Wed/Thurs. Hosts are not required to stay on site during their days off. Start/end dates and schedules are negotiable.
RESPONSIBILITIES:
- Ensures that campground visitors have reservations or occupy a first-come first-serve site, and only camp at their designated site during their stay
- Educates visitors about rules and regulations of the campground and Forest (quiet hours, occupant limit, fire restrictions, etc.)
- Reports serious violations of regulations to the Forest Service point of contact or Law Enforcement as warranted.
- Cleans and maintains restrooms, fire rings, and grounds
- Communicates professionally with visitors; affinity for engaging with the public is required
DUTIES:
- Clean vault restrooms daily (cleaning toilet riser, restocking toilet paper, and sweeping and mopping floor)
- Pick up litter during daily walk-through of campgrounds
- Clean out fire rings/campsites as needed
- Report all major maintenance needs, vandalism, and other problems
- Assist Forest Service staff with maintenance at campground as needed
- Educate and inform visitors regarding the area and recreational opportunities in addition to rules and regulations of the Forest
QUALIFICATIONS:
- Ability and desire to interact extensively with visitors
- Attention to detail
- Willingness to clean and maintain restrooms, picnic sites, campsites, etc.
- Upbeat and positive attitude
- Past campground host experience is helpful, but not required. Training will be provided by the Forest Service.
- Must have and maintain a valid driver’s license
- Must have and maintain a functioning personal vehicle
- Must provide their own RV or camp trailer (and UTV/ATV, if desired).
