JOB DESCRIPTION:

Maintenance Volunteers support the primary mission of the National Park Service to preserve and protect the park resources, and to promote the enjoyment of those resources by visitors. Maintenance volunteers support operational maintenance work including but not limited to custodial work, minor repairs, snow removal, and assisting park craft and trades staff. Work may be performed alone (or with a spouse if applicable), with other volunteers or park staff. Volunteer work may be in public areas and volunteers occasionally may be approached by visitors with questions. As such, a cheerful demeanor/attitude and tidy appearance are very important. All park volunteers provide customer service and occasionally provide visitor information (including but not limited to the park, wildlife, flora, programs, weather, available services, fees required, availability of water, distances to locations of interest, airports, hospitals, local services, etc.… to name a few), therefore, they should familiarize themselves with the local area, park history, and resources.

As a maintenance volunteer, direction and supervision will be provided primarily by the Roads and Trails Supervisor and/or the Building and Utilities Supervisor (depending on daily your assignment). Work will be completed at various locations in the park including campgrounds, landscapes, roadways, trails, buildings, and will consist of both interior and exterior work. Volunteers will be responsible for tracking their hours and work for the park volunteer coordinator and their supervisor.

Typical Maintenance Volunteer Duties (not inclusive of all possible assignments):

·        Custodial Duties in public areas: Stock toilet paper, remove trash/litter, clean mirrors, fill soap dispensers, wipe down sinks and toilets, sweep and mop floors

·        Minor repairs to structures as assigned (repairing loose boards, broken batten repair, painting, staining, tightening loose hinges etc.). Working alongside maintenance staff as a helper as assigned. 

·        Litter pickup

·        Mowing, trimming, gardening, pruning, weeding, mulching

·        Splitting firewood and stacking; cleaning ash/debris from campfire & picnic grills

·        Leaf removal (raking and leaf blowers)

·        Minor repairs to exterior structures (i.e. picnic table repair or fabrication, fence repair, trail work)

·        Snow removal from walkways

·        Operates Government radios and vehicles (a valid state driver’s license is required to operate Government vehicles), appropriately and professionally. Volunteers will take mandatory ATV/EV training and safety training.

·        Document/record Volunteer hours performed on daily/monthly logs and submit to appropriate Supervisor and volunteer coordinator at the end of each month.

·        Other duties may be assigned as needed to support the mission of the NPS and Prince William Forest Park, and visitors. Works with minimal Supervision

 

 As a volunteer, you shall provide your own accommodations, such as an RV, including appropriate attachments, etc. at your expense. The NPS agrees to provide access to utility hook-ups for an RV and will provide a picnic table, fire ring, water, sewer, and electric at no cost to the volunteer. Other tools and equipment needed to perform assignments outlined in herein shall be provided by the NPS.
