Job Description

Volunteer Summer Host/Caretaker position at Chief Looking Glass Fishing Access Site (FAS) with a free RV site for the 2025 season. The camp host site features a graveled host pad measuring 64 ft in length and 35 ft in width, electrical (50 amp) service, telephone service, sewage service (holding tank). Unfortunately, there is no water hook ups at Chief Looking Glass. Management is seeking alternatives with a water holding tank to supply grey water to the host site.

Duties:

Volunteer duties include but are not limited to:

·         Overseeing public use of Chief Looking Glass Fishing Access Site and notifying proper authorities if visitor behavior or use is inconsistent with site regulations.

·         Providing information to the public and assisting people with general information.

o   Campsite information, Bitterroot Valley and Missoula Valley information.

·         Informing all campers of camp fee requirements and other pertinent regulations by assisting and answering questions if necessary.

·         Checking site for unsafe conditions.

·         Light Litter clean up.

·         Walking the trails and site road.

·         Other duties may be added during the duration of the host program.

Location:

Chief Looking Glass is a Montana Fish, Wildlife and Parks Fishing Access Site located on the Bitterroot River approximately 2 miles north of the community of Florence and 15 miles south of Missoula. The site sits off of Interstate 93 making it a popular place for through campers traveling through Montana. It provides access to the Bitterroot River, which is renowned for its trout fishing opportunities. The site offers amenities such as camping, hand-carry boat launch, picnic areas, and day use parking facilities, making it a popular destination for anglers and outdoor enthusiasts. Named after Chief Looking Glass of the Nez Perce tribe, the site serves as a reminder of the historical and cultural significance of the area.

Visitors at Chief Looking Glass Fishing Access Site can enjoy fishing for a variety of trout species including, rainbow trout, brown trout, and cutthroat trout amidst the picturesque backdrop of the Bitterroot Valley. The site is also an ideal spot for picnicking, birdwatching and simply taking in the natural beauty of the surrounding landscape.

Overall, Chief Looking Glass Fishing Access Site offers both recreational enjoyment but also reminds visitors of the rich connection to indigenous history of the Bitterroot Valley and its people.

Schedule:

A gatekeeper locks the entrance gate at 10:00pm each evening (campers can only exit after 10:00pm) and reopens the gate at 6:00am each morning.

The camp host position runs May 1st to September 15th, 2024. Hosts are on duty 5 days a week and can average 20 hours of work.

·         a primitive boat launch

·         two concrete vault toilets.
