Observatory Campground

This opportunity is open to a retired couple as it requires both to assist in care of the campground.

Palomar Mountain is a mountain in the Peninsular Ranges in northern San Diego County. It is famous as the location of the Palomar Observatory and Hale Telescope.

Palomar Mountain features spectacular views of the Pacific Ocean. Coniferous forest cover much of the area and this is one of the few southern California areas with a Sierra Nevada like atmosphere.

As a campground host you will often be the first Forest representative the visiting public encounters and the first person they will consider for information regarding the area. Volunteer campground host are an integral part of the Forest recreation program and are critical in achieving the Forest Service mission of “Caring For The Land And Serving The People.” As, such we are seeking individuals who can represent the Cleveland Nation Forest in a professional and courteous manner.

 

SCOPE OF WORK:

 

·      Trained in and adhere to all Forest Service safety standards and customer service procedures including Forest Service ethics and conduct, Job Hazard Analysis (JHA), Risk Assessments Worksheets (RAW), communications, volunteer roles and responsibilities, and the terms of this agreement. All volunteers under this agreement will also fill out an emergency contact sheet.

·      Will post reservation and greet incoming campers, provide visitor information/local recreational opportunity, report compliance/maintenance issues to Forest Service officer that patrols the area.

·      Volunteer will always have a professional, courteous, and helpful attitude when dealing with all members of the public, fellow volunteers, and Forest Service employees.

·      Maintenance responsibilities include, but are not limited to, picking up trash in the campground and fire rings, raking flammable materials away from fire rings, and maintaining/painting/posting signs, conduct tree trimming, vegetation control measures and other infrastructure maintenance to promote an enjoyable recreation visitors experience.

·      In regard to campground restrooms:

o  Clean and maintain assigned restroom facilities. Cleaning duties including sweeping, mopping, cleaning toilets, emptying trash receptacles, etc.

o  Restock restroom supplies as needed, supplies will be provided by the Forest Service (both PPE and restroom supplies).

o  Will be using brooms, mops, cleaning brushes, various cleaners and sanitizers, etc. to accomplish various cleaning tasks and must be able to understand the proper use and care of such equipment and supplies.

o  Cleaning schedule will also be posted at each restroom being serviced/cleaned, twice daily or as frequently needed (on busy days for example weekends).     

·      Will work in cooperation with USFS employees and inform USFS staff of any problems or issues that may occur at the campground. Host should be able to recognize and remove hazards which can be unsafe for visitors and or/notify appropriate FS Recreation Technicians or program manager.

·      Hosts ARE NOT responsible for the enforcement of rules and regulations. If the Host observes a minor violation, the Host is permitted to make contact with the violator in a helpful and informative manner. Hosts are NOT to involve themselves in an argument or antagonize the person or persons in violation. In all situations where the likelihood of confrontation is elevated, contact Forest Service personnel or law enforcement to take appropriate action. The potential for hosts to be involved in an unfriendly situation or serious conflict does exist, especially in a high-use and remote forest settings. There is nothing in your duties as Campground Hosts worth jeopardizing your safety.

 

HOUSING: Volunteer will be provided space at the campground and campground fees will be waived for each host with an active volunteer service agreement. Must provide their own personal RV, Fifth Wheel, or Trailer camping accommodations, maintained to be welcoming and approachable by the public. Forest Service will provide the Campground Host with sewer, water hookups, electricity hook up. Propane hook-up,(Subject to change on a case by case assigned unit).
