JOB DESCRIPTION:

Do you call an RV your home? If so, we have the perfect opportunity for you as a Campground Host! Red Rock Canyon National Conservation Area is a breathtaking destination that offers visitors a chance to escape the hustle and bustle of city life, while still being conveniently close to the amenities in the Las Vegas Valley. Pairs (e.g. couples, siblings, etc.) for this position are preferred, as we only have two host spots, and the campground is fairly large. Must be available for a minimum of 32 hours per week. 

 

POSITION DESCRIPTION: Volunteers will work at the Red Rock Canyon Campground tending to its daily operations. Daily operations include visitor interactions as well as cleaning and maintaining the campground. The campground season is from September 1 – May 31. The work is primarily outdoors and may be strenuous and especially during inclement weather. The work may consist of providing public information, processing site reservations and fees, facility maintenance, and cleaning of facilities. Also, this role involves standing or walking for long periods in extreme weather.

 

PHYSICAL ACTIVITY/FITNESS REQUIREMENTS:

• Ability to lift up to 20 lbs.

• Ability to work in extreme temperatures.

• Ability to work in rough or uneven terrain.

• Ability to use simple hand tools (shovel, rake, McCloud, Pulaski).

• Ability to maintain the campground facilities by cleaning the bathrooms on a daily basis, cleaning the campsites between campers including the fire pits, picnic tables, and tent pads, and reporting any maintenance issues to BLM staff.

 

OTHER QUALIFICATIONS:

• Maintain professional etiquette and appearance while wearing the volunteer uniform.

• Distinguish between emergencies and normal campground challenges that can be resolved at a non-law enforcement level.

• Ability to work as a team and individually.

• Ability to work unsupervised.

• Ability to pass DOI’s authorized Defensive Driving Course (must be renewed every 3 years).

• Ability to communicate orally and in writing with staff and the general public.

• Ability to check-in and check-out guests using the recreation.gov HUB platform, make arrival placards, and vehicle parking tags.

• Ability to provide own trailer, tent, or RV to live in while conducting camp host duties.

• Ability to pass a Federal Background Investigation.

 

PHYSICAL LOCATION & HOURS:

• Camp Hosts are expected to reside onsite at the Red Rock Canyon Campground (Moenkopi Loop, Las Vegas, NV 89161) and maintain combined operating hours of 7 am to 8 pm during the campground season, which is September 1 – May 31.

• Five days a week and one to two shifts a day

 

ACCOMMODATIONS & REIMBURSEMENT:

• RV spots are provided along with water, sewer, and propane utilities.

• A reimbursement of expenses not to exceed the daily camp rate (currently $40/day and reimbursements take 2-3 weeks to process).

 

TRAINING REQUIREMENTS:

• Volunteer Orientation.

• Campground Specific Procedures.

• Personal Safety and Situational Awareness.

• Tool and Chemical Safety.

• Operation and safety training with special equipment as needed.

• Operation of BLM official radios and call procedures.

• Leave No Trace Principles.

• Complete the online Defensive Driving Course if operating a BLM vehicle.

 

REQUIRED PERSONAL PROTECTIVE EQUIPMENT (PPE):

• Closed toe shoes.

• High top boots, recommend if concerned with or prone to ankle injuries.

• Work gloves (provided by BLM).

• Protective eye wear, when necessary (provided by BLM).

• Sun protection.

• Long pants, highly recommended.

• Trip/fall hazard, walking in rugged/uneven terrain.

• Cut/Puncture hazards.

• Lifting injuries-back, muscles, joints.

• Exposure to Hazardous Materials.

• Pinch/crush hazards.

• Environmental hazards.

• Encountering hostile public.

 

REPORTING REQUIREMENTS:

• Follow Check in/Check out protocol and other procedures and stipulations directed by the BLM Rangers.

• Immediately report any injuries (within 48 hours) sustained while in volunteer service to your BLM Supervisor, even if you think the injury is not serious. Worker’s compensation claims require documentation and have strict timelines.

• Immediately report any damages to personal or government property sustained while in volunteer service to your BLM Supervisor.

• Volunteers will not act as Law Enforcement but will report concerns and illegal activity to their BLM Ranger/Supervisor.
