ADDRESS: 351 Pacu Lane, Suite 200  Bishop, California, 93514

DATES: 2025-05-01

DEPT: Forest Service

JOB DESCRIPTION:

Recruitment is now open for the 2025 Summer Season! Volunteers are needed for the following 3-month commitments: May 1 – August 1, 2025 and July 1, 2025 – October 1, 2025.

Come spend your summer in the beautiful and sunny Mono Basin, nestled in the foothills below the eastern gate of Yosemite National Park. The Mono Basin National Scenic Area is the first congressionally designated scenic area in the United States and exists to protect the natural and scenic values in the area. Mono Lake, a saltwater lake that is fed by freshwater springs, is known for its interesting geological structures called ‘tufa.’

We are looking for volunteers who enjoy working directly with the public. This position opens, closes, and staffs the Mono Basin National Scenic Area Visitor Center front desk. Our volunteer hosts will provide information about local recreational opportunities, rules, and permits as needed. Our Visitor Center has a world-class exhibit hall, small store, theater, and administrative offices.

About the Position:

Hosts provide interpretative patio talks and answer visitor questions at the main information desk. Topics include recreational opportunities in the Inyo National Forest, Yosemite National Park, local natural and cultural resources, safety precautions, rules and regulations, recreational opportunities, and area services. You may be asked to assist staff with operations and maintenance of facilities, including cleaning bathrooms, emptying trash containers, ensuring the grounds are free of litter, and other more complex maintenance and visitor facility projects within your abilities.

The weekly schedule is typically 4 days on duty and 3 days off duty. The daily schedule may vary. For volunteers, the hourly requirement is 32 hours per week. The exact start and end dates are negotiable.

In return, we provide:

  • An RV or motor home site with utility hook-ups for electric, water, and sewage OR room in shared barracks.
  • A small-team environment to learn and grow in.
  • Opportunities to explore behind the scenes with staff.
  • Unique landscapes filled with incredible plants and animals.

When applying, please provide contact information for three references. Two references should be professional.
