JOB DESCRIPTION:

We are looking for friendly, customer-service focused campground hosts for our beautiful Ruby Creek Campground, located on the banks of the Madison River about a 15 minute drive south of Ennis MT. Ruby Creek Campground is an expanded amenity campground that includes large campsites, a boat ramp, vault toilets, and drinking water. The campground is open from May 1 thru October 1 annually. Our busy season runs from Memorial Day weekend through Labor Day weekend. The campsites usually fill during our busy season and the boat ramp will become busy and somewhat congested during popular weekends for fishing activities. The campground is a first come first served campground with a fee tube (Iron Ranger) located on site. The campground hosts’ primary responsibility is to provide information and assistance to the public, meet and greet arrivals, and maintain campground facilities. Often our campground hosts are the first and only contact campers may have with a BLM representative, it is imperative to public safety and the recreation program as a whole that campers receive professional and accurate messaging regarding their stay in the campgrounds and surrounding areas. It is critical that a host conveys a professional and personable presence, maintaining a positive attitude agency-approved appearance, including wearing the appropriate attire (provided).

 

Volunteers must be physically capable of performing all duties and are expected to be on location 5 days a week, including weekends and holidays, providing volunteer assistance a minimum of 4 hours per day (5 days a week). Hosts will be reimbursed up to 5 days a week and are required to take 2 days off each week to enjoy the surrounding area and gain necessary and required rest and recuperation for their next shift. Host positions begin, at the earliest, May 1st, and run, at the latest, through September 30th. If recreation-specific needs arise, specific dates may be negotiated with the Outdoor Recreation Planner(s) and/or the Assistant Field Manager. Length of volunteer season is not guaranteed and is contingent upon staffing, budget, and workforce requirements, and may be shorter due to unforeseen circumstances. Volunteer positions are at-will, and may be terminated at any time at the discretion of the hiring agency.

Specific Duties:

 

Hosts will provide information regarding campground stay(s), local recreational opportunities, BLM rules and regulations, and best resource management practices. They will identify inappropriate and/or illicit behavior and REPORT to BLM and/or local Law Enforcement and/or recreation staff, depending on severity and/or urgency.

 

Daily duties include cleaning, sweeping, mowing, weed eating, lifting garbage bags and cans, shoveling, replacing signs, and raking. Cleaning includes, but is not limited to vault toilets, fire rings, picnic tables, and parking areas. Vault toilets must be cleaned and stocked daily when on duty, sometimes multiple times a day. Hosts will REPORT any repairs needed to recreation staff and may be asked to assist with those repairs and/or other maintenance needs. Hosts will be asked to assist BLM recreation staff with managing online reservations through recreation.gov, update reservation placards on site posts, support special projects related to the campground and/or other nearby recreation facilities, assist rangers with fee compliance, conducts compliance on parking, informs visitors of pertinent fire restrictions, and complete visitor data collection.

 

Hosts will be provided with all necessary equipment and personal protection equipment (PPE) to perform duties including volunteer uniform, gloves, hardhat, hearing and eye protection, mowers/trimmers, UTV (official use only within the confines of the campground), hand tools, power tools, and equipment fuel. The BLM will pay for all replacement and repairs of tools and equipment that is damaged or broken due to normal on-duty wear and tear. Government equipment that is damaged due to misuse and/or negligence on the volunteers’ end will be their responsibility to repair and/or replace.

Host Benefits: The BLM Dillon Field Office reimburses the camp host $38 per day, for no more than 5 days of volunteer work, for meals and incidental expenses. The free host site MAY INCLUDE full electric, septic, and water hookups; regardless of location drinking water will be provided. Internet may be available via a cell phone booster and DSL service may become available in the future. The BLM does not reimburse for the purchase of hosts’ propane.
