JOB DESCRIPTION:
Upper Mesa Falls is a remote site with a Visitor Center and amazing waterfall. It is a very busy place. Duties will include light maintenance, litter pick up, talking to visitors about the site plus educating visitors on animals and plants of the greater Yellowstone Ecosystem. We are a fee site, and there could be some duties related to that. Volunteers must work well with the general public and Forest Service Employees.
Johnny Sack cabin is a beloved and heavily visited site. Volunteers will open and close the cabin each day. They will perform light maintenance, sweeping and dusting and keeping the grounds tidy. There is no restroom in the cabin, but one is available in the campground, a quarter mile walk away. There are plenty of training materials at the cabin. Volunteers will talk with visitors and answer questions about the cabin and the area. The site is open daily from 10am- 4pm, mid-June through mid-September. The cabin can see 500+ visitors per day. Volunteers must enjoy talking to visitors and telling the history of Johnny Sack and the cabin.
RV pads at the Island Park Ranger District are available, with electric, sewer, and water available. Sites have cell and satellite service.
Hiring for the position usually begins in December/January. Volunteers will rotate between Johnny Sack Cabin and the Mesa Falls Visitors Center sites from Memorial Day weekend through mid-September, 3-4 days per week, 6 hours per day. There may be an opportunity to volunteer until the end of September to help with school group presentations. Weekend and holiday work will be required. Rotations will occur approximately every two weeks.
