JOB DESCRIPTION:
The volunteer operates park-owned telescopes, providing informal interpretation of what is seen in the telescope and/or what is seen with the naked eye for the benefit of park visitors. Volunteers provide formal constellation programs and/or astronomy illustrated slideshows, assist in evening star parties, work the visitor center desk answering orientation questions, and rove the park providing orientation and informal interpretation.
Major Duties
- Operate park-owned telescopes to show park visitors and residents astronomical objects at a variety of locations around the park, but mainly around the Grand Canyon Visitor Center.
- Research, develop, and present an astronomy/light pollution PowerPoint program lasting about 35-40 minutes in a large theater.
- Present a 25–45-minute Constellation Tours outside with a green laser pointer.
- Work the Grand Canyon Visitor Center orientation desk for a couple hours per day, answering visitor questions, helping to plan their visits, advertising for your astronomy events.
- Rove the Rim of the Canyon or the Historic Village, providing informal interpretation of the park resources and answering orientation questions.
- Solar astronomy may be conducted in front of the Grand Canyon Visitor Center or elsewhere along the rim.
Knowledge and Skills Required
- Ability to answer repetitive questions in a visitor center setting, using welcoming and professional customer-service techniques.
- Ability to maintain a positive attitude in a group setting for extended periods of time.
- Knowledge in astronomy.
- Ability to set up and use both celestial and solar telescopes.
- Ability to conduct accurate night sky constellation tours.
- General customer service skills.
- Ability to work independently and live in a remote area.
- Ability to provide informal interpretation of astronomy using interpretive tools such as analogy, metaphor, storytelling, humor, props, etc.
Reimbursements
The only reimbursement authorized is for the use of personal property used to perform volunteer duties. Incidental expenses.
Housing
Free park housing or a free RV site will be provided. The volunteer may be living in shared housing with an NPS employee or another volunteer. The volunteer will have their own bedroom and bathroom but share kitchen and living space.
