JOB DESCRIPTION:

The Olympic National Forest is seeking a volunteer host at Big Creek Campground for the 2025 season!

 

Duties:  

  • Greeting visitors with a friendly and helpful attitude; providing appropriate Forest information.
  • Assisting with campsite registration as needed and encourage fee compliance.
  • Cleaning and resupplying restroom facilities daily, includes replacing toilet paper, sweeping/mopping restroom floors, cleaning bathroom toilets.
  • Picking up litter within the campground.
  • Other duties performed as needed includes removing cobwebs and hornet nests from buildings, cleaning campfire pits and grills, extinguishing unattended campfires, and trimming brush along trails.
  • Hosts do not enforce forest rules and regulations or collect any fees but do encourage visitors to recreate responsibly.
  • Reporting any issues or concerns to the Recreation Manager and Staff.
  • Positively representing the Olympic National Forest.

 

Position Details & Expectations:

The camp host site has water, electricity, and a holding tank for gray water. Hosts will remain on site 5 days per week (Thurs-Mon) with Tuesday and Wednesday as days off. Hosts will be available to answer visitor questions within reasonable hours, typically 9am-7pm. A stipend will be given at $35/day worked. Propane costs will not be reimbursed. A Forest Service volunteer name tag, badge and vest will be issued upon arrival and returned at the end of the season.  Start and end dates may be negotiable.

Campground Description: 

Big Creek Campground is located approximately 9 miles west of Hoodsport, Washington near Lake Cushman. There are 65 camping units, 12 of which are walk-in tent sites and 53 which accommodate either tents or RVs. The campground offers potable water, vault toilets, and all sites are first-come, first-served. The campground sits in a second-growth forested area, with Big Creek running adjacent to it. There are three covered picnic shelters available for group day use, as well as a trailhead within the campground that accesses a small loop trail around the campground, as well as a connector trail that leads to Upper Big Creek and Mt. Elinor.

Area Description:

The area is generally mild in temperature and may be cold or rainy during the early summer. The weather warms up over the season, becoming hot in July. Nearby attractions include Lake Cushman, Hood Canal, as well as access to the Olympic National Park. The Cushman Lake corridor is popular for hiking, mountain biking, swimming, fishing, picnicking, and also accesses the Staircase Entrance to Olympic National Park. The nearest town of Hoodsport, WA is approximately 15 miles east.
