JOB DESCRIPTION:

REQUIRED: A camper/rv that is not longer than 26 feet in length.

 

This position is within the Resource and Visitor Protection Division at Acadia National Park, Maine. The volunteer

will be stationed at: Blackwoods Campground: Route 3, Bar Harbor or Seawall Campground: Seawall Rd, Southwest Harbor

 

The NPS will provide a trailer site with utilities (water, sewer, and electric hookups) within the campground. The

campground host will provide their own RV/trailer, that is 26 feet long or shorter. The position involves

providing information to park visitors about the park and its resources, as well as interpreting park regulations

for visitors to ensure compliance. The position is expected to last from late May through mid-October.

 

Major Duties

  • Maintain assigned campsite in accordance with all park regulations and set a good example for visitors.
  • Contact campers throughout campground and at the information desk of the ranger station.
  • Provide information about the park, interpretive programs, campground regulations, and the surrounding area.
  • Interpret campground regulations for visitors and report law enforcement issues to park rangers.
  • Ensure visitors understand and follow food storage regulations. Does not perform law enforcement.
  • Assist campers with campsite registration. Does not perform payment compliance.
  • Report any safety hazards, in or out of the campground, to supervisor.
  • Assist with other projects outside the campground as directed by supervisor including help with traffic control and emergency situations.
  • Perform litter control and cleaning of campground grill/fire pits. Report campground maintenance needs to park rangers.
  • Clean restrooms, which include, but are not limited to, restocking paper towels and toilet paper dispensers, sweeping and mopping floors, disinfecting toilets and urinals, and cleaning sinks and countertops.
  • Perform moderate maintenance duties including painting, repairing picnic tables, operating a weed whacker, and a lawn mower.
  • Assist visitors after hours on occasion.
  • Use a park radio professionally and properly.

 

Requirements

  • Possesses own recreational vehicle that is 26 feet in length or shorter – does not require government housing.
  • Must work at least 32 hours/week in order to receive free RV spot.
  • Enjoy meeting, talking with, and helping people from all over the world.
  • Possess a friendly, helpful, and professional demeanor with all visitors and co-workers.
  • Ability to assist campers in order to ensure their safety and enjoyment of the park.
  • Capable of dealing with stressful situations in a professional manner.
  • Ability to follow directions and work as a team player.
  • Properly wear the Volunteer In Parks (VIP) uniform, including only wearing the uniform and/or uniform parts while on official duty.
  • Ability to lift 30 pounds.

 

Knowledge and Skills Required

  • Basic knowledge of park resources and services.
  • Ability to effectively communicate with visitors, park staff, and others.
  • Desire to assist people.
  • Ability to read a map.
  • Ability to properly and professionally use the park radio system.

 

Physical Demands

Low to moderate physical effort is required for this position. Standing for extended periods of time and walking

up and down inclines on dirt or asphalt surfaces is required.

 

Work Environment

The majority of the work is outside with exposure to extremes of temperature, rain, wind, darkness and direct sunlight.
