DESCRIPTION:

W. Kerr Scott Dam and Reservoir is seeking an individual or a couple (preferred) to fill one Visitor Center Host and Guide position at the Visitor Assistance Center / Environmental Education Center (co-located in same building) for the 2023 recreation season.

W. Kerr Scott Dam and Reservoir is seeking individuals or couples (preferred) to fill one Visitor Center Host and Guide position at the Visitor Assistance Center (VAC) / Environmental Education Center (EEC) for the 2023 recreation season from January 1 to October 31. The VAC and EEC are co-located in same building with the EEC located downstairs and accessible by inside stairways or an outside entrance. Two sets of hosts will be assigned to the VAC/EEC with both sets of hosts sharing responsibilities. Hosts must provide own RV/Travel Trailer and reside on a provided campsite inside Volunteer Village and/or Berry Mountain Park during the duration of the season. Hosts will work on a rotating 4 days on/4 days off schedule. Hosts will work 25-30 hours per week (25 hours for an individual, 30 shared hours for couples). The Volunteer Coordinator and Interpretive Program Ranger will identify the clock hours necessary to provide optimum coverage and services to visitors. Couples do not have to work together but may share hours (i.e., one individual works the first 4 hours then the other individual works the second 4 hours). The VAC will be open on weekdays while the EEC will be open on the weekends and holidays. Hosts will work both independently and with USACE staff, volunteers, and contractors. See duties in DUTIES section.

 

DUTIES

When scheduled or on duty, hosts will:

1.   Wear issued volunteer clothing.

2.   Open and close the VAC/EEC.

3.   Answer visitor questions regarding recreation opportunities.

4.   Conduct tours of the VAC/EEC.

5.   Answer telephones.

6.   Conduct checks of the facilities for cleanliness and perform light general maintenance as needed.

7.   Sell passes and bookstore items.

8.   Stock brochures and bookstore items.

9.   Assist with interpretive programs.

10.  Inform visitors of park rules, regulations, and policies.

11.  Collect comment cards and surveys.

12.  Relay complaints, compliance issues, overcrowding, and maintenance actions to Park Ranger staff.

13.  Report administratively to the Volunteer Coordinator and functionally to the Interpretive Ranger.

 

QUALIFICATIONS
  1.  Prior camping experience.
  2.  Prior experience with customer service.
  3.  Ability to sit or stand for significant periods of time.
  4. Friendly, cheerful, organized, and professional manner.
  5. Basic administrative skills.
  6. Basic maintenance skills.
  7. Collect comment cards and surveys.
  8. Physical ability to lift approximately 30 pounds and carry for 25 feet.
  9. Desire to meet and interact with people from varied backgrounds.
  10.  Appearance should be neat and reflect positively on the Corps.
  11.  Ability to remain calm in busy situations.
  12. Visually able to spot safety hazards and take prompt appropriate action to correct in accordance with training provided.

WORK ENVIRONMENT

Hosts will work both independently and with USACE staff, volunteers, and contractors. Work will be primarily indoors in an office type environment. The VAC and EEC are co-located in same building with the EEC located downstairs and accessible by inside stairways or an outside entrance. Therefore, climbing stairs on occasions may be required. Work will involve frequent interactions with adults and children.

The lake is located within a 15–20-minute drive of restaurants, grocery stores, retail stores, auto and RV repair shops, entertainment venues, and medical facilities. Average high temperatures range from low 70’s to high 80’s with average low temperatures ranging from low 50’s to high 60’s during May to September. On average, Wilkesboro has 213 sunny days and gets 50 inches of rain per year.

Free full hookups (water, electric, sewer) provided in exchange for volunteer service. Internet access is available at the gatehouses and at Volunteer Village. Laundry facilities are located at Volunteer Village.
